Each item can be ranked from 1 to 7. A ranking of 1 describes care that does not even meet custodial care needs while a ranking of 7 describes excellent, high-quality personalized care. The definitions for quality used in the FDCRS are consistent with the Child Development Associate Family Day Care Credentialing Program. The scale is accompanied by a training video and video guide and training workbook.
The FDCRS can be used easily by a family child care provider for self-assessment, by supervisors, trainers, or researchers for evaluation and site development as well as by agency staff to build quality. If used as a self-study/self improvement guide, inadequate or minimal scores on the FDCRS scale indicate areas for emphasis in training and learning. The FDCRS can also be used as a pre and post test measure to assess the impact of training and continuing education.
